About Us

Teaching for Change seeks to ensure that the next generation has the skills, information, and commitment to play an active role in their community and in civic society.
We pursue this goal through professional development for teachers, parent organizing, and curriculum development. To learn more about our programs, visit our home website at www.teachingforchange.org.
Key to all of our work is the promotion of access to high-quality literature that helps the reader understand current events and reflects the full diversity of the world we live in.
Our bookstore at Busboys and Poets and website are not like most places where you have to search the shelves for great books. We have done that for you. Here you will find the very best books in each category for children, young adults, teachers, and the broader community from a progressive perspective. Our focus is to provide books that activate your mind and community.
Background
In 1992 we began the Teaching for Change mail order catalog as a means to promote and distribute progressive resources to over 20,000 teachers, parents and activists around the country. This led to our partnership with Busboys and Poets restaurant in fall 2005. We run the bookstore and help to host the author events at the 14th and V Street location of Busboys and Poets. All bookstore staff is employed by Teaching for Change.
In the spring of 2009 we ceased operation of the Teaching for Change catalog for financial reasons, but educators all over the country told us they still wanted access to our lists of recommended books. Meanwhile, people from out of town visiting Busboys and Poets asked how to find the same selection online.
We searched for a solution that would unite our book lists for teachers with the top-selling titles at the bookstore at Busboys and Poets. We are very pleased to have created a webstore that can offer you a strong selection of progressive titles available for shipping or bookstore pick-up.
